Construction and materials
Armstrong Flooring offers a diverse range of linoleum flooring solutions, each meticulously constructed with quality and durability in mind. Linoleum, a natural and sustainable flooring material, is recognized for its longevity and ease of maintenance. The construction of Armstrong Flooring's linoleum products typically involves a multi-layer system, designed to provide both aesthetic appeal and robust performance.
The core of most Armstrong linoleum products is composed of natural, renewable raw materials. These materials are then combined and processed to create a resilient sheet or tile. The specific composition can vary slightly depending on the product line, but generally includes:
- Linseed Oil: Derived from flax seeds, this is the primary binder and provides the material's characteristic resilience and ability to oxidize and harden.
- Cork Dust or Wood Flour: These natural fillers add bulk and structure to the material, contributing to its sound-dampening qualities and comfort underfoot.
- Resins: Natural resins are often incorporated to enhance the material's durability and flexibility.
- Pigments: Natural mineral pigments are used to achieve a wide spectrum of colors and patterns.
- Jute or Canvas Backing: A sturdy backing, typically made from jute or canvas, provides dimensional stability and facilitates installation.
The manufacturing process involves mixing these ingredients and then pressing them onto the backing material. The resulting material then undergoes a curing process, during which the linseed oil oxidizes and hardens, creating a solid, monolithic sheet. A wear layer is often applied to the surface to provide additional protection against scratches, scuffs, and stains, further enhancing the flooring's longevity and simplifying cleaning. This wear layer can be a clear coat or a decorative design, depending on the desired aesthetic.
Armstrong Flooring's linoleum products are designed to be suitable for a variety of applications, from residential spaces to high-traffic commercial environments. Their commitment to using natural and renewable materials underscores a focus on sustainability, while the inherent properties of linoleum ensure a long-lasting and beautiful flooring solution.
